Origin and history
The bakery located at 45 rue de Popincourt, in the 11th arrondissement of Paris, is an architectural and artisanal testimony of the early twentieth century. Built around 1900 by the workshop of decorators Benoist and Fils, it illustrates the style of "French and Viennese bakery", characteristic of the period. Its front is distinguished by six carved panels depicting rural scenes, evoking mills, millstones and rivers, while the entrance door features an engraved glass with a somuse, an emblematic symbol of the profession.
Classified as a Historical Monument by order of 23 May 1984, this bakery owes its protection to the exceptional quality of its decor, both outdoor and indoor. The preserved elements, such as decorative panels and stained glass windows, reflect the know-how of the craftsmen of the Benoist and Sons workshop, whose name appears under the Benoit or Benoist variants in the archives. This place thus embodies the alliance between utilitarian function and aesthetic ambition, unique to the Parisian shops of the Belle Époque.
Although the exact address (45 rue de Popincourt) and its GPS location are documented, the mapping accuracy remains considered fair (note of 5/10), highlighting the limitations of the available geolocation data. Today, this artisanal heritage offers an overview of decorative techniques and artistic aspirations that marked Parisian commercial signs at the turn of the century, while raising the question of its current accessibility to the public, not specified in the sources.
