Origin and history

The beacon of the Morées, located in Saint-Nazaire in Loire-Atlantique, is a historic monument registered since 22 November 2011. It is the oldest maritime signalling work in the Loire estuary, towards Nantes. Built in 1777 according to the plans of Engineer Groleau, it was designed to guide ships in this strategic area.

In 1893, the beacon was enhanced to accommodate a fire, thereby improving its night-time signalling function. The building, of truncated shape, is made of cut stone and painted in green, with the inscription "MOREES" in white. Its simple yet robust architecture reflects its practical usefulness for river and maritime navigation.

The beacon of the Mores bears witness to the historic importance of Saint-Nazaire as a port and to the evolution of maritime signalling techniques between the 18th and 19th centuries. Its inscription as a historic monument underscores its heritage value and its role in local history.
