Origin and history
The monument to Noël Ballay, located on the boulevard de la Courtille in Chartres (Eure-et-Loir), is a bronze-carved tribute to the governor general of French West Africa (AOF). Directed by Henri Allouard in 1904, it is distinguished by its composition, which merges base and bust, reflecting the artistic research of the 1880s. Its originality is also due to its colonial character, rare in this city, while the original of Conakry has disappeared.
Inaugurated in 1904, the monument was melted in 1942 when non-ferrous metals were mobilized during the Second World War. It was reconstructed in 1950 thanks to preserved casts, before being registered as historical monuments on 23 March 2017. This carved group, owned by the municipality, is now protected for its artistic and historical value.
The monument is located near the Lycée de Chartres, according to the data of the Merimée database, although its exact location has been the subject of varying details (place du Lycée or boulevard de la Courtille). Its inscription specifically covers the 1904 bronze group, as defined in the protection order. The quality of its execution and its exoticism make it a remarkable work in the local heritage.
