Origin and history

The Saint John Baptistery of Puy-en-Velay is one of the few paleo-Christian Baptisteries still standing in Gaul. Built between the 5th and 10th centuries, it initially served for baptisms by semi-immersion in an octagonal pool, before becoming a place of worship after the 10th century. A dome was destroyed during an earthquake in 1428, marking its architectural evolution.

The building, rectangular with a two-span nave and a semicircular apse, preserves 11th century frescoes. It is connected to the cathedral by the Saint John porch. Its facades, rhythmic with blind bays in the middle of the wall, reflect its ancient heritage and medieval changes.

Ranked a historic monument in 1840, it was one of the first protected sites in France. Integrated into UNESCO's world heritage via the roads of Santiago de Compostela, it bears witness to the religious and historical importance of Puy-en-Velay since the early Middle Ages.
