The Cabrol barrack in its entirety, with its external arrangements (not cadastral, public maritime domain and shown under No 53 on the plan annexed to the decree): inscription by order of 10 September 2013
Origin and history
The Cabrol barrack, located at the Cove de la Roquette in Salses-le-Château, is an emblematic example of the Roussillon barracas. These structures were used as seasonal habitat for fishermen, designed as a land extension of their vessels. Their architecture, both simple and ingenious, was based on local materials: marsh reeds, canes of Provence, or old recycled boat masts. Over time, materials such as tarred cardboard or corrugated sheet metal have replaced scarce natural resources.
These cabins, often self-built, illustrated a perfect adaptation to their ecological environment and their primary function: a habitat-tool dedicated to the work of fishermen. Their isothermic principle, modern for the time, made it possible to resist local climatic conditions. They thus embodied a symbiosis between man, his activity and the natural environment, reflecting a way of life rooted in the maritime traditions of the Roussillon.
Cabrol was fully protected, including its exterior features, by a registration order under the Historic Monuments on 10 September 2013. This ranking underlines its heritage importance as a material testimony of vernacular practices related to fishing in the Mediterranean. Its location on the public maritime domain also strengthens its inextricable link with the coastal history of the region.
