Origin and history

The fortified barn of Marval is a building located in the commune of the same name, in Haute-Vienne, Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. Dating from the pivotal period between the 16th and 17th centuries, this monument illustrates the defensive architecture applied to agricultural buildings, typical of rural areas exposed to conflicts or looting during this period.

Classified as a Historic Monument, the barn has been fully protected since a decree of May 31, 2021. It is located on cadastral parcels No.174 and 175, section AB, and its exact location is reported to be in Bourg, Marval. The accuracy of its location is considered fair, with a score of 5 out of 10 in the Merimée database.

At that time, fortified barns often served as refuges for local populations and their crops, in a context of insecurity and social tensions. In Limousin, which was a predominantly rural region, these buildings reflected the protection needs of peasant communities, while at the same time demonstrating their collective organisation around agricultural resources.

Available sources, including Monumentum and internal data, confirm its status as a registered building and its heritage role. No information is provided on its current accessibility, whether it be visits, rentals or accommodation.
