Origin and history

Chenonceaux's barrier house was built in 1877 by the Compagnie du chemin de fer de Paris à Orléans, eight years after the introduction of the Vierzon-Saint-Pierre-des-Corps railway line. The building served both as a dwelling and as a workstation for the barrier guard, which was responsible for monitoring the adjacent crossing. Its strategic location, between the roads leading to Chenonceau Castle and the railway stop, reflects its role in local traffic management.

The architecture of the pavilion is distinguished by its blend of tuffeau and bricks, with sill windows and gothic skylights, evoking the Renaissance buildings of the region. This unique style on the railway line aimed to harmonize with the local heritage, especially the neighbouring castle, without replicating its forms. Lamprequins adorning the slate roof and attic attices add to its picturesque character.

Classified as a historical monument by order of 28 December 1984, this house illustrates the adaptation of railway infrastructure to regional architectural contexts. Although close to the Chenonceaux stop, it was not part of it and indirectly replaced the abandoned old Chenonceaux-Chisseaux station. Today it bears witness to the history of transport and the industrial heritage of Touraine.
