Origin and history

The Notre-Dame-de-la-Delivrande Basilica, located in Dover-la-Delivrande, is one of the oldest Marian shrines in Normandy. Its origin dates back to the seventh century, when Regnobert de Bayeux, bishop of Bayeux, died in 666, established a pilgrimage there dedicated to a black Virgin, succeeding a pagan cult of Demeter. This place, already famous in the Middle Ages, was honored by Louis XI in 1470 and 1473, then by figures like Saint John Eudes (1643) and Saint Thérèse de Lisieux (1887). The original statue, destroyed in 1562, was replaced in 1580.

The current Norman Gothic-style basilica replaces two earlier buildings: a 7th-century chapel destroyed by the Vikings in 830, and a 12th-century Romanesque church, enlarged in the 15th and 18th centuries. In the 19th century, architect Jacques-Eugène Barthélémy designed the new sanctuary, whose first stone was laid in 1862. Pope Pius IX ran the Black Virgin in 1872, and Leo XIII erected the church as a minor basilica in 1895. The stained glass windows, damaged in 1944, were restored.

The sanctuary, served by a train station from 1875 to 1950, hosts 18,000 annual pilgrims. Its stained glass windows evoke Marian apparitions (Lourdes, Pontmain), and its chapels house ex-votos and ship models. Inside, adorned by René Lalique, reflects a continuous devotion for 14 centuries. The basilica, listed as a Historic Monument in 1975, remains a symbol of Norman faith and its architectural heritage.

The pilgrimage, linked to miracles and a statue discovered thanks to a sheep, also attracted writers like Gustave Flaubert, who mentioned the site in Bouvard and Pécuchet. Today, the parish continues to welcome the faithful and the sick, emphasizing the social and spiritual role of the sanctuary. The remains of the old church, visible near the avenue de la Basilica, recall its thousand-year history.

The basilica embodies the transition between paganism and Christianity, with Marian devotion rooted in local culture. Its architecture, stained glass windows and interior decoration (Lalique) make it a jewel of Norman religious heritage, while at the same time testifying to the evolution of pilgrimage practices since the Gallo-Roman era.
