Origin and history

The Notre-Dame-des-Miracles Basilica of Mauriac, located in the Cantal in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, is a masterpiece of auvergnat Romanesque art. Built in the 11th and 12th centuries, it replaces a chapel dedicated to Saint Théodechilde, a legendary figure linked to Clovis or Thierry I. Its architecture combines austerity of the choir and elegance of the pillars of the nave, with a broken cradle vault and vaulted sides. The tympanum of the western portal, attributed to the Languedoc school, represents the Ascension of Christ, surrounded by the Twelve Apostles and the Virgin, with a Latin inscription evoking their rise to heaven.

The history of the basilica combines legendary stories and historical facts. According to tradition, Clovis' daughter or granddaughter Théodechilde founded a monastery on this site after a miraculous apparition of the Virgin saving her from a lioness. The lands of Mauriac were reportedly given by Basolus, Count of Auvergne, to the abbey of Saint-Pierre-le-Vif de Sens. However, studies reveal that these titles of donation are false medievals (IXth–Xth centuries), intended to legitimize the possession of land by the abbey. The present church, built in the 12th century, incorporates older elements, such as a 12th century baptismal tank, rare in Haute-Auvergne.

Ranked a historic monument in 1840, the basilica underwent major changes, including the reconstruction of its octagonal bell tower in the 19th century by architect Aymon Mallay, marking the first example of neo-Roman art in the Cantal. The tympanum, damaged in 1574 by Protestants, and the 19th century stained glass windows, including a representative of Bishop Jean-Paul-Marie Lyonnet, bear witness to its rich artistic heritage. Built in a minor basilica in 1921 by Pope Benedict XV, it remains an active place of worship, with more than 500 annual celebrations.

The architecture of the basilica is characterized by a Latin cross plan, a nave of five spans, an overflowing transept, and a choir with hemicircular apse. The cupola on trunks of the transept cross, the carved capitals (foliage, fantastic animals), and the various external modillons illustrate the mastery of the Romanesque artisans. The western portal, framed with lions and decorated with zodiac signs, reflects Languedocian influences. The imposing dimensions (35.80 m in length, 14.55 m in height under nave) make it a major building of auvergnat religious heritage.

Religious disturbances marked its history, as the Protestant occupation of Mauriac in 1574, commemorated by an annual procession until the 19th century. The translation of Saint Mary's relics in the 12th century, orchestrated by Ermengarde d'Apchon, reinforces his status as a sacred place. The successive restorations, especially after the Revolution (demolition of the bell tower in 1793), preserved its integrity while adapting the building to modern liturgical needs. Today, the basilica combines historical heritage and spiritual life, attracting pilgrims and visitors with its exceptional tympanum and atmosphere.
