Origin and history

The Saint-Sauveur Basilica of Dinan, located in the Côtes-d'Armor, is a Catholic religious building whose oldest parts date back to the twelfth century. Founded according to legend by Riwallon le Roux, seigneur of Dinan, on his return from crusade in 1112, it is attested as possession of the Abbey of Saint-Jacut as early as 1123. The original Romanesque church, with a unique nave, was profoundly transformed from 1480 with the addition of a north side and the reconstruction of the bedside and transept in a flamboyant Gothic style.

At the beginning of the 16th century, under the direction of the architect Roland Bougnard, the bedside was entirely rebuilt, incorporating Renaissance elements such as carved rinseaux and twisted columns. The collapse of the bell tower in 1547 led to major changes, including the abandonment of the stone vault in favour of a walled structure. The basilica became a place of Marian devotion thanks to the relief of Notre-Dame-des-Vertus, a 15th century bas-relief from the Cordeliers convent.

Ranked a Historic Monument in 1862, the basilica underwent several restoration campaigns, notably in the 19th century under the direction of architects Hippolyte Béziers-Lafosse and Victor Ruprich-Robert. It houses remarkable furniture, including the cenotaph of Bertrand du Guesclin's heart, an organ of Aristide Cavaillé-Coll (1839), and old and modern stained glass windows. In 1954 it was erected as a minor basilica by Pope Pius XII in recognition of its spiritual and heritage importance.

The architecture of the basilica reflects its turbulent history: the western facade preserves Romanesque (lower part) and Gothic (high part), while the bedside, though unfinished, illustrates the transition between the flamboyant Gothic and the Renaissance. The southern wall, novel, contrasts with the north wall, Gothic, pierced by vast bays. The transept, not vaulted, is covered with a walled frame of 1646, and the choir, surrounded by five radiant chapels, bears witness to the architectural ambition of the sixteenth century.

The basilica plays a central role in the religious and cultural life of Dinan. In the 18th century, it housed up to twelve trade brotherhoods and four devotional brotherhoods, reflecting the importance of religious practice in the city. During the Revolution, transformed into the Temple of Reason and then into a hay attic, it was worshipped in 1801. Today, it remains a place of pilgrimage and tourism, classified in the heart of the remarkable Dinan Heritage Site.

Archaeological excavations carried out in 2019 in front of the basilica revealed medieval and modern burials in the old cemetery (now the English Garden), as well as traces of previous occupation, including an 18th and 19th century calvary. These discoveries also brought to light the evolution of the ground level, raised by about a metre since the Middle Ages, raising questions about the transformations that the building has undergone over the centuries.
