Origin and history
The Fountain Basin, known as "Carré des Sources", is a historical monument located in the commune of Rivière, in the department of Pas-de-Calais (Hauts-de-France). Built during the 3rd quarter of the 17th century, this basin is a remarkable hydraulic structure, integrated into an architectural complex including masonries and a fence wall. It is located in the hamlet of Brétencourt, between the streets of Château, Fermont and Crinchon, and is now fully protected by a registration order dated 9 April 2024.
This monument is associated with Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban, Marquis and renowned military engineer, whose intervention in its design or realization is mentioned. The basin, owned by the commune of Rivière, bears witness to the importance of hydraulic infrastructure in the military and civilian development projects of the time. Its precise location, shown in the cadastre under section AL, plot 58, highlights its anchoring in the local landscape.
The location of the Fountain Basin is documented with an accuracy deemed fair (note of 5/10), and its official address includes the streets of the Château, Fermont and Crinchon. This monument, although little known, illustrates the hydraulic and architectural heritage of the Hauts-de-France, linked to the military and urban history of the region under the Ancien Régime. Its recent listing as a Historic Monument in 2024 attests to its heritage value and the desire to preserve it for future generations.
