Origin and history

Dorfhus is a historical monument located in Habsheim, in the department of Upper Rhine (Great East). Built in the second half of the 16th century, it is dated precisely from 1578 thanks to a vintage engraved on its gable, accompanied by the weapons of the city. This multipurpose building served successively as a town hall, courthouse, wheat hall, and then as a gendarmerie barracks between 1799 and 1801, before housing a school from 1820 until the late 1980s. It is the oldest building in the commune.

The Dorfhus cellar, partially vaulted in a full-scale cradle, covers only part of the building. Over the centuries, its multiple uses have altered some of its original features, such as its openings, stairway and toothed gables. Despite these transformations, it retains a major heritage value, illustrating the Alsatian civil architecture of the Renaissance.

Ranked a historic monument in 1991, the Dorfhus is now owned by the municipality of Habsheim. The protected elements include its facades, roofs and vaulted cellar. Its exact address, 90 rue du Général-de-Gaulle, makes it a central landmark in the local urban fabric, testifying to its historic role as a place of power, commerce and education.
