Origin and history
The Beaulieu-le-Vieux farm, located in Baron, is a large agricultural complex isolated in the middle of the fields, visible from a distance. It consists of a main house body built in the 16th century, an imposing barn, a hangar, and a central pediluvius where horses were washed. A first enclosure, adorned with a modest 18th century grid, delimits the courtyard, while a second, 800 meters long, encompasses pastures and two small garden houses. This site illustrates rural architectural evolution over three centuries, combining agricultural and residential functions.
The manor house, partly dated from the 16th century, was renovated in the 18th century and recently restored. Its interior retains some notable elements: a dining room with 17th-century panelling, a re-used funerary slab, an 18th-century wrought iron staircase, and gypsum shops adorning an alcove room. These gypseries are attributed to an Italian artist whose name, engraved on the back of the funeral slab, remains the only indication of his identity. The protection under the Historic Monuments in 1982 concerns the barn, the facades, the fence, the pediluve, and some interior rooms.
Classified as a Historical Monument in 1982, the farm bears witness to the spatial and social organization of the rural areas of the Ancien Régime. The barn, a central element, is classified, while the facades, the 18th century fence, the pediluve, and some interiors (dining room, alcove room) are inscribed. Private property, its present state is the result of recent restorations, preserving a utilitarian and aesthetic heritage, characteristic of Hauts-de-France.
