Origin and history
The farm located at the place called En Tournéal, aux Moussières (Jura), is a pastoral building built in 1789. It perfectly illustrates the architectural model of the "attic houses" of the Hautes-Combes du Jura, with an almost square plan and a two-paned roof covering gable facades. The house opens onto the main façade, while a barn lift provides direct access to the floor on the other façade. This type of construction, adapted to local constraints, served both as a dwelling and as a storage place for crops and valuable goods.
The attic, characteristic of this farm, is composed of a stone compartment with a wooden core, and includes a masonry cellar to preserve valuables. The overall structure of the farm, including its right-of-way to the ground, has not been altered since 1828, which is an intact testimony to the rural architecture of the late eighteenth century. The whole, including the farm, the attic, the supply, the beekeeper, the tank and the fence, was inscribed in the Historical Monuments by order of 27 November 2014.
This farm reflects the way of life of pastoral communities in the Hautes-Combes du Jura at the end of the Ancien Régime. "Attic houses" were designed to optimize space and protect agricultural resources and property of peasant families. Their robust architecture, adapted to the harsh climate of the region, reflects the ingenuity of local builders and the importance of agriculture and livestock in the rural economy of the time.
