Origin and history
The mansion located at 15 rue de l'Eglise in Baugé, in the department of Maine-et-Loire (49), is a building whose house and commons date back to the 17th century. This monument illustrates the civil architecture of this period, marked by sober lines and a spatial organization typical of provincial private hotels. The 18th century changes probably adapted interior to changes in lifestyles and taste, without fundamentally altering the original structure.
At the beginning of the 19th century, major developments transformed the interior distribution and added emblematic elements: a monumental staircase, a gate opening onto the street, as well as an orangery and a bath building. These additions reflect the influence of neoclassical tendencies and the growing desire for comfort in the aristocratic or bourgeois residences of the time. The ensemble, including the terraced gardens, has been protected by an inscription in the Historic Monuments since December 12, 1991, highlighting its heritage value.
The hotel's location in the historic centre of Baugé (now Baugé-en-Anjou) reinforces its interest. The city, anchored in the Pays de la Loire, retains a varied architectural heritage, bearing witness to its medieval and modern past. This private hotel, with its outbuildings and orangery, offers a representative example of the evolution of urban residences between the 17th and 19th centuries, combining residential, reception and leisure functions.
