Origin and history

The cemetery cross of Conflans-sur-Lanterne is a religious monument located in the department of Haute-Saône, in the region Bourgogne-Franche-Comté. Dated from the 16th century, it is backed by the wall of the southern transept of the local church. This type of cross, common in medieval and reborn cemeteries, served both as a spiritual landmark and as a funeral marker for the village community.

Listed as historical monuments by decree of 13 October 1971, this cross illustrates the rural religious heritage of Franche-Comté. At that time, villages like Conflans-sur-Lanterne were organized around their church and cemetery, central places of social and religious life. Cemetery crosses, often in stone, symbolized divine protection over the dead and living.

The precise location of the cross is indicated as 2 Place de Lorraine, in the commune of Conflans-sur-Lanterne (code INSEE 70168). Owned by the municipality, it is one of the protected elements of the local heritage, listed in the Merimée base under reference AD 286. No additional information is available on its sponsor, artist or possible restorations.
