Origin and history

The Cross of Belan-sur-Ource is part of the historical landscape of Châtillonnais, a region rich in abbeys and castles, where there are many stone crosses. These monuments, often linked to cemeteries, churches or pilgrimage paths, bear witness to a religious and commemorative tradition rooted in the territory. Their presence reflects both popular piety and medieval and modern parish organization.

The Châtillonnais has several types of cross: the cross of cemeteries (as in Bellenod-sur-Seine or Verdonnet, dated between the 14th and 18th centuries), the monumental crosses (for example in Charrey-sur-Seine or Baigneux-les-Jifs, classified or listed in the Historical Monuments), and the road calvaries (such as that of Semond, of the 14th century). These monuments, often protected since the early twentieth century, illustrate the diversity of devotional practices and local funeral uses.

Although the Belan-sur-Ource Cross is not explicitly dated or described in available sources, its membership in this network of monuments suggests a similar role: marking a place of worship, a cemetery, or a procession path. His study is part of the larger one of the Châtillonese crosses, where each piece offers a light on the beliefs and social history of Burgundy-Franche-Comté.
