Origin and history
The Belfry of Châteldon, located in the Puy-de-Dôme, is originally the unique fortified gate of the first enclosure of the village, built in the 14th and 16th centuries. This monument, now classified, protected a bridge on a Vauziron bypass. The structure preserves traces of its defensive role, such as the entrance arch whose core corresponds to the original door in blocks of andesite. A cornice of flat stones on wood crows separates the upper levels, while a roof in the pavilion with lanternon houses the bell. The small square days of the third level, vestige of communications with the round path, testify to its initial military use.
The transformation of the belfry probably occurred in the 16th century, when the stage of the clock was added, marking the transition from a fortification to a communal symbol. In 1900-1901 the architect Fayet undertook a major restoration, using concrete covered with a granite masonry wall, partially altering its medieval appearance. A second campaign of work in 1982, led by the Monuments Historiques, concerned the structure, the cover and the zingury. These interventions reflect the challenges of preserving a military and civilian heritage, now owned by the municipality.
Ranked Historic Monument by decree of December 16, 1958, the belfry embodies the architectural and functional evolution of a medieval building. Its current location, rue du Fort, and its Insee code (63102) link it to the territory of Puy-de-Dôme, in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. Although the accuracy of its location is considered mediocre (note 5/10), it remains a major historical landmark, linked to the former low court of Châteldon Castle.
