Well: by order of 11 March 1911
Origin and history
The well located in front of the western gate of the church of Sézanne is a 16th century historical monument. It is located precisely at the address 10 Place du Puits Doré, in the commune of Sézanne, in Marne (Department 51), within the Grand Est region. This well was classified by ministerial decree on 11 March 1911, reflecting its historic and architectural importance to the city and its history.
In modern times, public wells played a central role in the daily lives of urban and rural communities. They served as a gathering point for the inhabitants, who drew water for their domestic and agricultural needs. In a region such as Champagne, where wine and cereal activities were dominant, access to a reliable water source was essential.
This type of monument thus reflects the social organization and technical priorities of the 16th and 17th centuries, where water supply partly determined the prosperity of cities.
