Origin and history

The Benedictine abbey Saint-Sernin, located in Le Monastery (Aveyron, Occitanie), has its origins in the ninth century, the period of its foundation. Today, its vestiges in elevation amount to an elongated building, the fruit of two major countrysides: a 15th century rectangular house and a house body flanked by towers, built in the 17th and 18th centuries. The latter, backed by the medieval building, illustrates the architectural evolution of the site, with various construction techniques, including a stone wall in the basement evoking ancient methods.

The structure underwent two major phases of transformation in the west wing: the first in the 17th-18th century, the second in the 18th century. This work redefined its vocation, with the development of a kitchen, a refectory on the ground floor, and upstairs bedrooms for a boarding school. This spatial organization, preserved until today, reflects the adaptation of the monastery to the educational and community needs of modern times.

The current protections, dated 2014, concern the abbatial building, the soil of the surrounding parcels and the fence wall, excluding a 19th century barn. Property of an association, the abbey combines historical heritage and contemporary uses (visits, rentals), while bearing the traces of its multiple redevelopments, from medieval foundations to classical additions.
