Origin and history

The Priory Saint-Clément is a former Benedictine monastery located in Craon, in the department of Mayenne, in the Pays de la Loire region. Founded under the authority of the abbey of the Trinity of Vendôme, it bears witness to monastic influence in this region from the 11th century. Its buildings, partially preserved, include medieval elements such as the cellars, the refectory and remains of the Notre-Dame-la-Grande chapel.

In the 11th century, the priory was at the heart of a conflict between Maurice I de Craon, local lord, and Geoffroi de Vendôme, abbot of the Trinity. Mauritius claims feudal rights to the priory, which led to his excommunication in 1105 by the bishop of Angers, Renaud de Martigné, and to his condemnation by the count of Anjou, Geoffroi Martel. This conflict illustrates the tensions between seigneurial power and religious institutions at that time.

The architectural remains of the priory, including the house of the Portal, the facades of the dormitories and refectories, as well as the traces of the church and cloister, were inscribed in the historical monuments in 1989. These elements, now protected, offer an overview of medieval monastic life and the spatial organization of Benedictine priories. Some buildings are now communal or private property, and their conservation status varies.

Historical sources mention the priory in works such as the Dictionnaire historique de la Mayenne by Abbé Angot and the Annales ecclesiastical d'Anjou. These references highlight its local importance, although little detail is available on its exact foundation or subsequent evolution. Archaeological remains, including those of the church and cemetery, remain valuable evidence of its past.
