Origin and history
The studio of Stuc Benoît, located in Chalon-sur-Saône in Saône-et-Loire, is an emblematic industrial site of the first half of the 20th century. It was founded by Benoît establishments, manufacturers of stucco and staff, whose production was based on an innovative method of mass casting. The workshop was organized around a central courtyard accessible by a porch, framed by two long buildings dedicated to the manufacturing stages: packaging and drying. These infrastructures reflect a rational organization typical of the emerging industrialization in the field of decorative materials.
Staff sets, still visible today under the entrance porch and on the façade of the main building, illustrate the artistic and technical know-how of the workshop. An adjoining house also has stuccos, although later, reflecting the evolution of styles and methods. The original layout of the porch and court was preserved, providing an authentic insight into the working environment of the time.
Registered as a historical monument since June 9, 2011, the Benoît workshop is recognized for its architectural and industrial heritage. The protection specifically concerns the porch and the courtyard façade of the entrance building, key elements of its identity. This ranking underlines the importance of this site in local and regional history, as well as in the techniques of manufacturing stucco and staff in France.
The precise address of the workshop, 20 B Rue de Traves, and its Insee code (71076) place it in a district of Chalon-sur-Saône marked by artisanal and industrial activity. Although the information on its visit or current use is limited, its state of conservation and location make it a potentially accessible place to discover an unknown part of the heritage of the 20th century in Burgundy-Franche-Comté.
