Origin and history
The Church of the Purification-de-la-Vierge of Berzé-la-Ville is a Roman Catholic religious building built in the 11th century. It was initially attached to the Cluny Abbey, as evidenced by its bell tower, once surmounted by a girouette with the arms of the abbots. The western façade and the bay in the middle of the attic date back to this founding period. This link with Cluny, the major spiritual and political centre of the Middle Ages, underscores its historical importance in the region.
In the 16th century, the church experienced significant enlargements, including the partially remodelled nave. This period also left a remarkable interior decor: the choir and side chapels are decorated with white motifs on a red background, made with stencil, a rare technique in Burgundy for this period. These decorative elements, as well as the altarpiece representing the Presentation to the Temple (restored in 1994), illustrate the artistic and liturgical evolution of the building.
The church was listed as a historic monument in 1993, recognizing its heritage value. The original altarpiece, classified in 1996, is now kept in town hall, while a copy occupies the building. Always active as a place of worship within the diocese of Autun, it belongs to the parish of Saint Vincent-en-Val-Lamartinien, perpetuating its religious vocation since the Middle Ages.
