Origin and history
La tilerie de Bissy is a former tile factory located in the commune of Saint-Martin-la-Patrouille, in the department of Saône-et-Loire, in the region of Bourgogne-Franche-Comté. Built in the first half of the 19th century, it illustrates the growth of local artisanal and industrial activities related to the production of building materials, in a rural context marked by self-sufficiency and increasing needs for housing and infrastructure.
The architectural complex consists of four distinct elements: an oven, a hall, and two houses. These reflect the typical characteristics of the rural habitat of the time, with materials and spatial organization adapted to the lifestyles of workers and artisans. The Hall, in particular, was listed as historic monuments by order of 19 July 2005, emphasizing its heritage interest and its role in local industrial history.
The Bissy tile factory is part of an economic landscape where tiles and brickworks played a key role, providing the materials necessary for the construction of surrounding villages and farms. These structures, often family or community, were part of a local economy where handicrafts and agriculture were closely linked. Their preservation offers today a concrete testimony of the know-how and working conditions of the nineteenth century in Burgundy.
