Origin and history

The military hospital of Bitche, located in the municipality of Bitche in Moselle (Great East Region), is an emblematic building built at the end of the eighteenth century. It operated as a hospital until 1939, marking over a century and a half of medical service. Its U-shaped architecture, closed by a gate corps, reflects the military norms of the time, although its decor remained unfinished. Inside, a pink sandstone bas-relief representing Atlas from the Langlois barracks adds an artistic dimension to the building.

After the Second World War, the building was occupied by Bitche City Hall until 1967, when it was converted into a medical-social centre, a function it still occupies today. The hospital and its bas-relief are listed in the Topographic Inventory of Lorraine, while elements such as the courtyard, garden, vaults and roof have been classified as historical monuments since 18 December 1991. These protections underline its historic and architectural importance.

The site, owned by the municipality, illustrates the evolution of the use of military buildings in France, from a sanitary vocation to civilian functions. Its official address, 46 rue Saint-Augustin, and its inscription in the Mérimée base confirm its anchoring in the local heritage. The accuracy of its location is estimated to be fair (level 5/10), and photographs licensed under Creative Commons document its current state.
