The engraved block called " Chez Michaux" and the plate pitch as shown on the plan annexed to the decree (Box AL 103): inscription by order of 30 November 2015

Origin and history

The engraved block Chez Michaux is a prehistoric rock located in Trois-Rivières, Guadeloupe (France). It is distinguished by its rock engravings, artistic and symbolic testimonies left by ancient populations. This site, although little documented in its archaeological details, illustrates the importance of prehistoric cultural expressions in the West Indies. Its classification as a historic monument in 2015 highlights its exceptional heritage value, despite its inaccessibility to the public due to its location on private property.

The rock engravings, typical of pre-Colombian Caribbean societies, reflect spiritual, artistic or communicative practices. In Guadeloupe, as in other islands of the Lesser Antilles, these remains are evidence of an ancient human occupation, marked by cultural exchanges and adaptation to the island environment. Engraved blocks, often associated with sacred or strategic sites, play a key role in understanding the lifestyles and beliefs of the first inhabitants of the region. Their preservation, though complex, remains essential to the perpetuation of this fragile heritage.

Ranked as a historic monument on November 30, 2015, the Chez Michaux block enjoys legal protection including its base, as defined by a plan annexed to the classification order. This measure aims to preserve the integrity of the site, threatened by its isolation and private ownership status. Despite its inaccessibility, the rock remains a symbol of the Guadeloupe Pre-Columbian heritage, integrated into the official list of historical monuments of the island. Its approximate location, near the Chemin de la Coulisse at Trois-Rivières, makes it a major archaeological point of interest for the Basse-Terre.
