The suspension bridge (public domain, not cadastre): registration by order of 24 October 2011
Origin and history
The suspension bridge of Bonneuil-Matours is a roadway in Vienna, New Aquitaine. Built in the early twentieth century, it replaces a first suspended bridge dated 1845. Opened to traffic in 1932, it allows the crossing of Vienna by departmental road 2. This bridge is distinguished by its metallic structure combined with a concrete slab, as well as by its concrete towers coated with metallic elements. It is the last suspended bridge in the Department of Vienna.
The bridge underwent two major restoration campaigns in 1973 and 1989 to preserve its structural integrity. It has been included in the inventory of historical monuments since October 24, 2011, in recognition of its innovative and modern character for its time. Its design, marked by the use of steel for large ranges, illustrates the evolution of construction techniques in the early twentieth century. It is now owned by the department.
The Bonneuil-Matours suspension bridge consists of a large central span suspended from two arches and two independent access spans. Its architecture reflects a transition between traditional techniques and 20th century industrial innovations. Although its location is approximate, it remains an important testimony of the technical and road heritage of the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region.
