Origin and history

The terminal with inscription of Labergement-lès-Seurre is a monument dated the 3rd quarter of the 18th century. It is distinguished by its location in the forest of Champ Jarley, on the territory of the municipality of Labergement-lès-Seurre (Côte-d-Or, Bourgogne-Franche-Comté). Classified as a Historical Monument by decree of 28 April 1970, it now belongs to the commune. Its precise location is referenced under cadastral plot B 332, although its GPS location is judged to be of satisfactory a priori accuracy (level 6/10).

The engraved boundaries of this period were generally used to mark territorial boundaries, often between seigneuries, parishes or state forests. Their presence reflects the growing importance, under the Old Regime, of the precise delimitation of spaces for fiscal, legal or forestry reasons. In Burgundy, a region marked by a strong agricultural and wine-growing activity, these landmarks also materialized the rights of collective or seigneurial use. The Champ Jarley Forest, where this boundary is located, could thus be subject to strict regulations on timber harvesting or hunting.

The entry of the pillar in the inventory of Historic Monuments in 1970 underlines its heritage value, probably linked to its seniority, its state of conservation or its representative character of the boundary practices of the time. No additional information is available on its sponsor, craftsman, or the exact content of its registration.
