German Way Borne à Corsaint en Côte-d'or

Heritage classified

Borne de la voie des Allemands : classification by order of 8 December 1944

Origin and history

The so-called German Way Terminal is a historic monument located in Corsaint, in the Côte-d'Or department (21), in the Burgundy-Franche-Comté region. Dated from the second half of the 15th century, it is at the crossroads of the Germans' way and the old Way of Vouhette in Menetreux. This monument, classified by ministerial decree on December 8, 1944, now belongs to the municipality of Corsaint.

Its location, although documented, remains approximate, with an accuracy estimated at 5/10 depending on available sources. Medieval pillars such as this often served to delimit territories, trade routes or pilgrimage routes. At the time of its creation, Burgundy was a dynamic region, marked by cultural and economic exchanges between northern and southern Europe.

The German route, mentioned in its name, could indicate an axis frequented by German merchants or travellers, although the sources do not specify its exact use. These monuments, although discreet, played a role in the spatial and symbolic organization of rural territories.
