Origin and history
The flowermark No 38 is an emblematic monument located in La Chapelle-Saint-Sulpice, in the Seine-et-Marne department, in the Île-de-France region. Built in the 19th century, it is distinguished by its ornamentation in the shape of a fleur de lys, a traditional symbol of French royalty. This type of terminal was often used to mark roads or territorial boundaries, reflecting the importance of expanding road infrastructure during this period.
Classified as historical monuments since 24 April 1964, this terminal is now kept near Vulaines-lès-Provins, on National Road 19. Its classification reflects its heritage value, linked to its architectural style and its historical role in spatial planning. Although little documented, its existence illustrates the effort to modernize communication channels in France in the 19th century, an era marked by industrialization and the development of road networks.
The precise location of the terminal, mentioned as being on National Route 19 at La Chapelle-Saint-Sulpice, suggests that it probably served as a marker for travellers or as a kilometric marker. The flowered pillars, by their distinctive design, also recall the link between the state and the monarchic symbols, even after the French Revolution. Their preservation now allows us to study the evolution of road signs and signals and their integration into the French cultural landscape.
