Border crossing of the Cleppé and Poncin justices: entry by order of 3 September 1934
Origin and history
The border pillar of the justices of Cleppé and Poncins is a historical monument dated the 15th century, located on the border of the communes of Cleppé and Poncins, in the Loire department. This vestige materialises the old demarcation between local courts, testifying to the administrative and judicial divisions of the medieval era. Its listing in the inventory of Historic Monuments by order of 3 September 1934 underlines its heritage importance as a historical territorial marker.
In the 15th century, border pillars played an essential role in the organisation of territories, delimiting the areas of jurisdiction of seigneuries or local courts. In the Loire region, then integrated into the Duchy of Bourbon or under royal influence, these stone markers avoided conflicts related to land use or the application of seigneurial rights. Their preservation today offers an insight into the political and social structures of the late Middle Ages in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes.
The available data, from the Merimée database and Monumentum, precisely locate this terminal near the place known as Charmillange, in the commune of Poncins (code Insee 42066). Although its GPS location is approximate (level of accuracy estimated at 5/10), its protected status makes it a rare part of the rural heritage of Niger, representative of medieval boundary practices.
