Origin and history

The border pillar located in Trenal, Jura department, is a historic monument classified since October 29, 1931. Currently filed, this pillar reflects an ancient territorial delimitation, although its exact period of implementation is not specified in the available sources. Its initial location, near the Grande Rue in Trenal, reflects its past role in marking local or regional borders.

In the region of Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, and more particularly in the Jura, boundary boundaries were essential to materialize the boundaries between territories, often linked to administrative, fiscal or seigneurial issues. These markers, sometimes modest, played a key role in the spatial organization of rural communities. Their preservation, like that of Trenal, makes it possible today to study the evolution of territorial divides and practices of management of shared spaces.
