Milestone of the First Empire: Registration by Order of May 15, 1926
Origin and history
The Mile of the First Empire at La Turbie is a road vestige located along the Corniche road in the Alpes-Maritimes department. This monument, dated from the first quarter of the 19th century, illustrates the organisation of the channels of communication under Napoleon I, when the French road network was modernized to facilitate military and civilian movements. Its listing in the inventory of Historic Monuments by order of 15 May 1926 underlines its heritage importance, although its exact location remains approximate according to available sources.
Turbie, a commune of the Alpes-Maritimes integrated into the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region, was at that time a strategic crossing between Nice and Menton. Miles, marked with miles or miles, served both as markers for travellers and as symbols of imperial power. Their presence also reflected the administrative and cultural influence of Napoleonic France on newly integrated territories, such as Nice County. Today, this terminal belongs to the municipality and bears witness to the local historical heritage.
Available data, notably from the Merimée database and Monumentum, indicate that the accuracy of its location is considered "very inadequate" (note 2/10). Despite this impreciseness, the approximate address "route de la Corniche" and the Insee code 06150 allow it to be located in the turbidian landscape. No additional information is provided on its conservation status, its accessibility to the public or any associated services (visits, rental).
