Borne, at the limit of the northern departments and the Somme: inscription by decree of 19 November 1941

Origin and history

Guzeaucourt is a 16th-century historical monument located in the northern department, on the border with the Somme. Classified by ministerial decree on 19 November 1941, it materialized a departmental boundary, an administrative and symbolic role typical of the ancient pillars. Its precise location along National Route 17 reflects its usefulness for travellers and local authorities of the time.

In 2021, the terminal was grounded before being stolen between 2021 and 2023, an event that highlights the risks faced by small isolated monuments. The available location data, rated as "very satisfactory" (8/10), comes from GPS coordinates and an address recorded in the Merimée database. This flight deprived the local heritage of a physical witness of the historical territorial divisions.

The historical context of the 16th century in the North of France was marked by frequent border tensions, especially between the counties of Flanders and Artois. Guzeaucourt's boundaries were then used to define often disputed territories, while facilitating the collection of taxes or tolls. Their presence illustrates the growing importance of territorial administration under the Old Regime, well before the standardization of modern borders.
