Two Gallo-Roman Miles: by Order of 26 September 1903
Origin and history
The Milestones of Cruas are two remains of the Gallo-Roman period. These stone monuments, typical of the Roman Empire, served to mark the distances along the ancient ways. Their presence in Cruas, on the Church Square, suggests the local importance of an axis of communication at that time. They illustrate the romanization of the region and its integration into imperial road networks.
Classified as historical monuments by order of 26 September 1903, these terminals have been protected by heritage for more than a century. Their precise location, "1 Place J.F. Chauvin" or "Place de l'Eglise", reflects their anchoring in the historical centre of Cruas. Owned by the commune, they are a material testimony of the Roman heritage in Ardèche, now accessible to the public.
Their reference in the Corpus Inscriptionum Latinarum (CIL 17-02, 00175) attests to their epigraphic and archaeological interest. These terminals are part of a larger set of monuments protected in France, as evidenced by their mention in the List of Protected Milestones and the List of Historic Monuments of the Ardèche. Their state of conservation and their urban location make them key elements of local heritage.
