Origin and history

The butcher shop at 178 rue de la Convention, in the 15th arrondissement of Paris, dates from the 1st quarter of the 20th century. Built in 1907, it is representative of the Parisian butcher shops of the time, with decorations of fixed under glass of high quality, remarkably preserved. These decorative elements, typical of the commercial craftsmanship of the Belle Époque, contributed to its inscription in the Historical Monuments in 2017.

The rue de la Convention, where this butcher shop is located, was pierced in two stages: between 1888 and 1896, absorbing part of the former rue Lemoult. It owes its name to the National Convention (1792-1795), a French revolutionary assembly. During the First World War, a shell fired by Grosse Bertha exploded in 1918 at No. 78 in the courtyard of Boucicaut Hospital, recalling the violence suffered by Paris during the conflict.

The area is home to several remarkable buildings, including the Church of Saint-Christophe-de-Javel (registered in 1975) and the former site of the National Printing (No. 27), now occupied by the Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs. The butcher shop of no 178, with its protected front, illustrates the artisanal and architectural heritage of this Parisian sector in the midst of transformation at the beginning of the 20th century.
