Origin and history
The church of Notre-Dame de Bourgougnague, located in the Lot-et-Garonne department, is a religious building dating back to the 12th century. Although the first mention of a church on this site dates back to the 13th century, the current building has been thoroughly redesigned in the 15th and 16th centuries. Its walls preserve painted decorations from the 14th and 15th centuries, including frescoes depicting the Seven Capital Sins, recently rediscovered. These medieval elements make it a rare testimony of the religious art of this period in Aquitaine.
In the 19th century, more precisely in the 4th quarter, the church underwent further modifications, although the sources do not specify their nature. The choir houses paintings made in 1945 by Giovanni Carlo Masutti, an Italian artist who worked in several churches in the department. This blend of styles, combining medieval heritage and modern contributions, illustrates the architectural and artistic evolution of this place of worship over nearly nine centuries.
The building was listed as historic monuments on August 27, 2013, recognizing its heritage value. Owned by the commune of Bourgougnague, the church is now fully protected, including its interior decorations. Its inscription in the Merimée base and its precise location (8 Le Bourg, 47410) make it a site accessible to researchers and visitors, although its GPS location is considered satisfactory a priori (note 7/10).
