Origin and history
The Hotel de Bourrouilhan, classified as a Historical Monument, consists of several bodies of buildings organised around a central garden. The oldest, rectangular, dates from the 16th century and is flanked by an external staircase tower serving the floors. A second house, adjacent to the first north side, extends the whole, while a wooden gallery supported by brick pillars adorns the rear façade. These elements reflect an evolutionary architecture marked by successive enlargements.
The site preserves remains of the second urban enclosure of Saint-Sever, built around 1450, integrated into the hotel structure. The first house, built in the 16th century, was completed in the same period by a second building and a gallery. In the middle of the 18th century, an extension was built on the south side, marking a phase of modernization. The first written mention of the hotel under the name Bourrouilhan appeared in 1779, sealing its historical identity.
The whole, including courtyard and garden, has been protected since 2018 for its heritage interest. Located at 21 rue du Général Lamarque, it illustrates the architectural evolution of an urban hotel in Les Landes, between medieval heritage and adaptations of the Lights. Its plan, combining rectilinarity and residual defensive elements, reflects the stylistic transitions of the region.
