Origin and history

La Boucherie moderne is an old butcher shop located at 81 rue Gabriel-Péri, in the historic centre of Pamiers, in Ariège. This trade is distinguished by its front adorned with earthenware from Gien, typical of the Art Deco style. Made between 1935 and 1936, this decor is the last vestige of the original state of the shop. It includes plant motifs, stylized animals, and a scene depicting a sheep in a landscape, illustrating the exceptional craftsmanship of the era.

The front, accompanied by its original carpentry, forms a coherent and rare set in the region. It was registered as historic monuments by order of 17 March 2003, thereby recognizing its heritage value. This type of commercial decor, characteristic of the 1930s, reflects the importance attached to aesthetics and modernity in the urban spaces of the inter-war period.

Pamiers, a city in southwestern France, was then an economic hub where mouth shops, like butchers, played a central role in everyday life. Modern Butchery reflects this time when art and crafts were getting married to embellish the streets, while meeting the practical needs of the inhabitants. Its earthenware décor, produced by the famous Gien earthworks, also highlights artistic exchanges between the French regions.

Today, this frontage remains a remarkable example of the 20th century commercial heritage in Occitanie. Although the trade ceased its original activity, its inscription to historical monuments ensures the preservation of this unique testimony of architecture and design of the 1930s.
