Origin and history

The shop located at 72 rue Saint-Antoine in the 4th arrondissement of Paris is an architectural testimony of the 2nd quarter of the 20th century. It occupies the ground floor of a building built at the end of the 19th century, and its front, classified as Historic Monument by order of May 23, 1984, perfectly illustrates the style of the commercial showcases of the 1930s. This type of front, characteristic of the inter-war period, reflects the evolution of advertising techniques and the Art Deco aesthetic which then marked the streets of Paris.

Originally, the building housed Sools Chapeller, before becoming the United Clothing Store. Today, it is transformed into a parapharmacy and retains a strong heritage value, symbolizing the adaptation of Parisian businesses to economic and social developments. The accuracy of its location is estimated as fair (note 5/10), and its official address, recorded in the Merimée base, confirms its anchoring in the historic Marais district.

The protection of the front door in 1984 underlines the importance attached to the preservation of minor architectural elements but representative of the urban heritage. These windows, often overlooked, play a key role in the collective memory of Parisian neighbourhoods, where retail has shaped local identity. Their style, both functional and adorned, bears witness to a time when commercial innovation was in line with art crafts.
