Origin and history

The Brady Pass is one of two covered passages of the 10th arrondissement of Paris, inaugurated on April 15, 1828. It was designed by two contractors: Mr. Brioats, a merchant, and Mr. Brady, a merchant who owns the land. Originally, the project provided for a straight passage of 113 shops with housing, linking Rue du Faubourg-Saint-Denis to Rue du Faubourg-Saint-Martin. However, the breakthrough of the boulevard de Strasbourg in 1852 divided the passage into two separate sections, removing its central part and its rotunda.

The western part, accessible by 46 rue du Faubourg-Saint-Denis, is covered with a glass window and today houses restaurants and shops indo-Pakistan, Mauritians and Reunion. The eastern part, starting at 43 rue du Faubourg-Saint-Martin, specializes in renting party costumes. The passage was listed as historic monuments on March 7, 2002, protecting its original facades, windows and floors.

The name of the passage pays tribute to Mr. Brady, a merchant established at No. 46 of the Faubourg Saint-Denis, where the main entrance is located. Originally dedicated to clothing stores, it has become a cultural place: a scene of the film Frantic (1987) by Roman Polanski was shot there, and it inspires works such as the song Passage Brady de Tété or texts of the writer Petr Král. Its architecture and its atmosphere make it a rare testimony of the 19th century Parisian passages.

The pass is served by the Château d'Eau metro station and remains a lively place, combining historical heritage and commercial dynamism. Protected elements include glass windows, interior facades, and entrance porches, reflecting its architectural and social importance for nearly two centuries.
