Origin and history

The Motte-Cordonnier Brewery came into being in 1650 in Armentiles under the name of Brewery of the Star, originally dedicated to sheet making. Repurchased in 1749 by Jean-Baptiste Desmazières, she entered the Motte-Cordonnier family, transmitting over ten generations until 1989. Destroyed during the First World War (1916-1917), it was rebuilt in 1922 by architect Marcel Forest as a brick castle factory, symbolizing the industrial modernity of the North.

The brewery, specialized in low fermentation, experienced its peak in the 20th century with brands such as Red Star or Bock M.C., producing up to 300,000 hl in 1947. Repurchased by Artois in 1989 and then by Interbrew, it ceased operations in 1993. The site, partially protected (1999, 2019), is now converted into housing (134 units planned) while preserving its architectural heritage, such as the brewing room and its copper vats.

The history of the site reflects the changes in the French brewing industry: the transition from artisanal production to industrial logic, then decline in the face of group concentration. The Motte-Cordonnier family revived the brand in 2018 after the death of Bertrand Motte, the last historical brewer. The buildings, witness to this epic, combine family heritage (since 1749) and technical innovations, such as active malting until 1965.

Architecturally, the complex is distinguished by its neo-regionalist style (bricks, belfry inspired by local traditions) and its integration into rail and river networks. The equipment preserved — 1920 tanks, Seck vacuum pump, Phoenix compressor — illustrates the manufacturing processes then. The protection of historic monuments today covers facades, roofs, and interior elements such as the stairwell or must attic.

The Domaine Motte-Cordonnier project (partial delivery in 2024) aims to reconcile industrial memory and contemporary use. The first phase has rehabilitated brasserie and maltery in housing, while the second phase will concern shops, docks and offices. This site, classified for its heritage and technical value, embodies the resilience of Armentières, a city marked by conflicts and economic conversion.
