Origin and history

The bread oven of the former Urval presbytery, located in Buisson-de-Cadouin, dates from the 18th century. It is built of stone masonry, with a base housing the oven itself. Above, a frame and torchi structure served as a reserve for the bags of flour and lodging for a domestic. The cover was initially lauze, a material typical of the region.

This monument was included in the inventory of Historic Monuments by order of 10 April 1941. It is now owned by the municipality. Its architecture reflects a practical organization, where the oven, the central element of daily life, was integrated into a functional set including storage and habitat.

The location of the oven in Urval (Comune du Buisson-de-Cadouin) is specified with good accuracy (level 8 of 10). This type of construction illustrates the importance of collective or semi-collective bread ovens in the rural villages of Nouvelle-Aquitaine, where baking bread was an essential community activity.

Available sources, including Monumentum and Merimée data, confirm its protected heritage status. The Insee code of the commune (24068) attaches this monument to the Dordogne department, in the former Aquitaine region, now integrated into the New Aquitaine.
