Cross of the Brech road, at the west exit on the C.I.C. 33 (Box A4,1487): inscription by order of 3 January 1935
Origin and history
La Croix de la Route de Brech is a monumental cross located in Plumergat, Morbihan department, in the United Kingdom. Dated from the 17th century, it is precisely on Rue Joseph Evenas, at the western exit of the commune. This monument is representative of the Breton crosses of that time, often erected at the crossroads or bordering roads to mark a place of devotion or community gathering.
The cross is backed by a slope and consists of a drum with cut strips, surmounted by a ring (or tailloir) supporting a representation of Christ on the cross, framed by characters. The ensemble is covered with a straight pediment, characteristic of the achievements of the period. Registered as a historical monument since 3 January 1935, it now belongs to the town of Plumergat. Its inscription reflects its heritage value and its role in the Breton cultural landscape.
The cross of paths, like Brech, played a central role in the religious and social life of rural communities in Brittany in the 17th and 18th centuries. They served as spiritual landmarks, places of prayer, or stopping places for processions. Their presence also reflected the influence of the Catholic Church in organizing territories and collective practices, in a region where the Christian faith was deeply rooted in everyday life.
