Origin and history
The Briquemaut lock site, located at Châtillon-Coligny in the Loiret, is an industrial complex dating from the last quarter of the 19th century. It consists of a lock with a lock, a lockhouse and an arrowed metal drawbridge, built around 1889. This bridge, operated by a counterweight, allowed to maintain the circulation of hauling ropes while increasing the air pull for the boats. This is the last work of this type still operational on the network studied.
The lock house and the drawbridge were erected simultaneously, illustrating the hydraulic engineering of the time. The whole, protected by a decree of 3 May 1999, bears witness to the importance of inland waterways for river transport in the 19th century. The drawbridge mechanism, rotating around an axis, combines functionality and technical innovation to facilitate navigation.
Ranked a Historic Monument, the site reflects the industrial heritage of the Centre-Val de Loire region. Its exceptional state of conservation makes it a rare example of canal-related utility architecture. The location, although noted as "passable" (level 5/10), remains accessible via the CR 40bis in Châtillon-Coligny, in the Loiret department.
