Origin and history
La Fountain de Saint-Tugal is a monumental fountain located in Laval, in the Mayenne department, in the Pays de la Loire region. Made of pink marble from Saint-Berthevin, it dates from the first quarter of the seventeenth century. Its architectural elements, such as the iron pilasters with bossed drums, the triangular pediment and the shell of the central niche, reflect the style of this era. Although built in the 17th century, it is often associated with the 18th century because of the major works carried out in 1741.
In 1741, arrangements were made to allow the fountain to receive, via a vaulted canal, the overflow of the fountain of the Palace. This work marks a functional adaptation of the monument, integrating wider hydraulic infrastructures. The fountain is a typical example of local baroque architecture, mixing public utility and neat aesthetics.
Ranked a historic monument by decree of 5 April 1930, the Saint-Tugal fountain enjoys heritage protection for its artistic and historical interest. It was renovated in 1996, ensuring its preservation for future generations. Today, it remains a symbol of the Vallois heritage, located in Place des Arts, and belongs to the municipality.
Saint-Berthevin marble, used for its construction, is a local stone renowned for its quality and characteristic pink colour. This material, combined with architectural details such as bosses and pediments, highlights the prestige of the fountain in Laval's urban landscape. Its inscription in the title of historical monuments bears witness to its importance in regional history.
The fountain is located at two mentioned addresses: Place des Arts and 8 Rue des Aliers, perhaps reflecting urban evolutions or localization inaccuracies. Its Insee code (53130) confirms its anchoring in Laval, Mayenne. The accuracy of its location is estimated as fair (level 5/10), depending on available sources.
