Origin and history
The fountain of Signs, classified as Historic Monument, dates from the 2nd quarter of the 16th century. It is located in the Var department, in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region, more precisely Place du Marché in the village of Signes. Its listing in the inventory of Historic Monuments by order of 24 February 1926 bears witness to its heritage importance. The location, although noted as "passable" (level 5/10), remains a central point of the village, near the rue de l'Horloge.
The public fountains of the 16th century in Provence played an essential role in the daily life of the communities. They served as drinking water, meeting places and sociability for the inhabitants. In a rural context such as Signes, these hydraulic structures were often linked to agriculture and local artisanal activities. Their preservation, like that of this fountain, reflects the attachment of the municipalities to their collective heritage.
The fountain is now owned by the municipality of Signes, whose Insee code is 83127. Although the available sources (Monumentum, Merimée base) do not specify its current state of openness to the public, its status as a monument makes it a notable element of the Var heritage. No information is provided on any historical characters related to its construction or past use.
