Origin and history

The bridge known as the Château de La Rochefoucauld, located at the foot of the eponymous building, dates from the 15th century. Although it seems to have preceded the present castle, it could have been rebuilt during its construction. This stone bridge, equipped with avant-becs refuges on each side, crosses the Tardoire River, a tributary of the Charente. Its architecture reflects the defensive and practical needs of the medieval era, facilitating both travel and the protection of travellers or merchants.

The Rochefoucauld, then called Rupe Fulcaudi in the 11th century, developed around its castle and fortifications. From the Middle Ages, the city was an important crossroads on a secondary route taken by pilgrims to Santiago de Compostela or Saintes. The bridge, as a strategic structure, played a key role in this network, linking the two banks of the Tardoire and ensuring continuity between the town and the surrounding lands. Its inscription in the historic monuments in 1935 underscores its heritage importance.

In the 15th century, the barony of La Rochefoucauld was one of the most powerful in Angoumois, controlling a vast territory and enjoying judicial privileges granted by King Charles V in 1370. The bridge, like other local infrastructure, is a testament to this period when the city was equipped with sustainable equipment. Its present state, although partially altered by time, still allows to appreciate medieval construction techniques and its harmonious integration into the urban and natural landscape.

Today, the bridge of the Château de La Rochefoucauld remains an emblematic vestige of feudal and Renaissance history of the region. Its inscription as a historical monument in 1935 guarantees its preservation, while providing visitors with a tangible overview of the architectural and strategic past of La Rochefoucauld-en-Angoumois. Its location, close to the classified castle, makes it an essential part of the local heritage.
