Origin and history

The Fountain of Bréhardec is located near the chapel Notre-Dame d'O, in the village of Bréhardec in Questembert, Morbihan. Built in the 18th century, it is distinguished by its architecture in stone and granite, with a small dome supported by four columns. Originally, a statue of the Virgin occupied the central niche, now extinct. This monument, known for its inexhaustible water, was a place of worship and rituals related to agriculture and water supply.

The fountain has been listed as historic monuments since 25 September 1928. Each year, during forgiveness, a procession leads the cross from the chapel to the fountain, where its foot is immersed in water. This water, once poured into fields to promote crops or poured into dry wells, symbolized divine protection and a source of fertility for the local community.

Owned by the municipality of Questembert, the Bréhardec fountain illustrates the religious and hydraulic heritage of Breton. Its sober architecture and its role in local traditions bear witness to the cultural and spiritual practices of the eighteenth century in Brittany. The exact location, rue Saint-Martin, and its current state reflect its historical importance and integration into the communal landscape.
