Origin and history

The Burgo Fountain is located about 400 metres south of the hamlet of Locméren des Prés, on the territory of the commune of Grand-Champ, in the department of Morbihan (Bretagne region). This monument, dated from the 16th century, is distinguished by its granite architecture, typical of the period. It is composed of an opening in full hanger surmounted by a brace decorated with carved motifs, framed by two columns at angles. A stone bench, moulded, extends the bases of the columns, while the roof, covered with stone slabs, has sharp gables.

Ranked as historical monuments by decree of 21 February 1942, the Burgo Fountain is a remarkable example of the Breton covered fountains of the Renaissance. Its state of conservation and its architectural details, such as carved cabbages or continuous mouldings, testify to the know-how of the artisans of the time. The fountain is now owned by the commune of Grand-Champ, although its accessibility to the public is not explicitly documented.

The covered fountains, like the one in Burgo, played a central role in the daily life of Breton rural communities in the 16th century. They served not only as a drinking water source, but also as a place of assembly and sociability. Their careful architecture often reflected the symbolic and practical importance of these works in the local landscape. The fountain of Burgo, with its carved elements and its integrated bench, illustrates this dual utilitarian and social function, while being part of the religious and secular heritage of Brittany.
